Pet Costumes Keep the Halloween Party Going in 2020
This time last year, pet parents in the U.S. were spending almost half a billion dollars preparing to dress up their pets for Halloween. That’s $490 million spent on pet costumes, or more than twice what was spent in 2010, according to the National Retail Federation. The data proves that Halloween festivities aren’t just for kids anymore.
With the possibility of more subdued Halloween celebrations this year due to the pandemic, as well as limitations from the economic downturn, spending may be down somewhat in 2020. On the other hand, dressing up your pet – and the potential social media buzz that goes with it – will likely be one of the most popular options for safe, socially-distant activities for families and friends.
When choosing a costume for your pet, you can find ideas in just about any category – spooky, funny, cute, or nostalgic. Inspiration may come from your favorite movie, food or season and can accommodate every size, shape, and tolerance of pet. According to the NRF, the top five Halloween costumes for pets in 2020 will be:
- Hot Dog
If you enjoy themed costumes for the whole family, there are plenty of retail and DIY options out there. For pets that don’t relish being decked out from head to toe, simple costumes work too, such as bunny ears or just a colorful handkerchief worn around the neck.
When it comes to the safety of your furry fairies and barking bees, make sure your pet’s costume is well-fitted and doesn’t contain any dangerous pieces that might become a choking hazard. Watch for signals of discomfort from your dog or cat, in case the fabric rubs the wrong way and causes irritation. Even the cutest costumes can slide around, causing a tripping hazard. The most important rule to remember is to always supervise your pet while in costume.
Keeping your sense of humor is definitely a must. And of course, the pictures are the best part! Especially if your celebrations end up being more virtual this year, a collection of adorable photos will keep the party going. We love seeing your creativity, so be sure to tag us in your spooky posts!
